Chic to Wear Pleather

In Editorial, Fashion on December 14, 2011 at 11:05 pm

Being the Fashionista that I am, I love shoes.  Unfortunately, my budget does not support my passion which has caused me to start buying shoes made from “pleather”, polyurethane processed to look like leather.  I can remember when wearing” pleather wasn’t a choice but the way life was. Today I choose to buy shoes made out of whatever material looks good. On my journey to become a vegetarian, I explore the lifestyle choices that it affects.  So now choosing my fashion is not only about me but about the animals they come from.

I’ll be honest, I was embarrassed to walk into Payless or back in the 80′s Fayva and Thom McCann shoes store.  Lately I have been thinking, why did I feel so bad about being buying Pleather?  I think that society depends on celebrities to decide what’s hot and what’s not.  It was never hot to buy copycat fashions from discount stores.  Middle America wanted to look and feel beautiful and created a means to getting that feeling.  Once again we are gravitating towards these stores because of the economics of life.  We want to be beautiful once again but without the backlash.

I guess we have to give credit to the new trend of vegetarian celebrities for the new view on vegetarian fashion.  Even though you don’t see stars buying their latest shoes from Payless or the Marshalls Mega Shoe Stores, you do see them buying designer pleather.  I know, who would have thought?

Vegan Designer, Stella McCartney

For example Stella McCartney does not use any animal products in the manufacturing of her line. Stella McCartney is a well-known vegetarian along with Natalie Portman, Lea Michelle, Alicia Silverstone and Pamela Anderson.  These are A-list celebrities who are not embarrassed to be vegetarian or wear vegetarian fashion.  If they don’t why should you?

Just like my diet, it’s not always vegetarian.  I own over 50 pairs of shoes and I can say that at least 20 pairs are pleather.  Am I ashamed?  No, because I look good.  Instead of calling it pleather, let’s call it “Vegetarian Fashion”.  Vegetarian Fashion includes all articles of clothing made from natural materials. When it comes to shoes a lot of hottest designers are using alternative materials to create their shoes.  Just the other day I bought a pair of Rachael Roy and I.N.C shoes and neither of them were leather. The crazy thing is that they are trying to charge as if they were….they are still designer.    If it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for me.  Even if it wasn’t…I still look good!
